Draft framework supports new contract monitoring
A draft framework to support contractors, primary care trusts and strategic health authorities in monitoring implementation of the new community pharmacy contract in England has been developed by the NHS Primary Care Contracting team.
The framework describes the aims and intended outcomes of each of the essential services, as well as of the medicines use review and prescription intervention services. It also lists examples of the evidence assessors might look for from the contractor, from national or local resources and during the assessment visit. In addition, the framework features a self-assessment form for contractors to assess their own implementation of the contract. The form has been developed by the Company Chemists’ Association, the National Pharmacy Association, the Co-operative Chemists Group and the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee.
Resources for PCTs are also incorporated into the framework. They include a list of the top 10 tips for those visiting pharmacies to assess implementation of the contract and a checklist to assess how PCTs are maximising the contribution of community pharmacy in meeting the aims of the NHS Improvement Plan and the “Choosing health” White Paper.
Primary Care Contracting says that the framework is in draft form and will be developed further as more information becomes available. The framework is accessible online from the Primary Care Contracting
